    The economic costs of white-collar crimes, such as corruption, bribery, embezzlement, abuse of authority, and fraud, are substantial. How to eradicate them is a mounting task in many countries. Using police archives, we apply machine learning algorithms to predict corruption crimes in Italian municipalities. Drawing on input data from 2011, our classification trees correctly forecast over 70 % (about 80 %) of the municipalities that will experience corruption episodes (an increase in corruption crimes) over the period 2012–2014. We show that algorithmic predictions could strengthen the ability of the 2012 Italy's anti-corruption law to fight white-collar delinquencies and prevent the occurrence of such crimes while preserving transparency and accountability of the policymaker

    The importance of dream in advertising: luxury versus mass market

    Luxury companies typically follow managerial approaches that differ from those of mass market companies and, in particular, their marketing strategies are based on opposite tactics. For instance, luxury companies commonly use imagery rather than text in their print advertising as a way of allowing customers to assign their own personal meanings to the message, thus fulfilling their desire to dream. Indeed, in this current era of information proliferation, today\u2019s consumers are increasingly less willing to process advertising information they receive as text. In this study we explore luxury communication by analyzing some luxury brands\u2019 print advertisement and showing how luxury companies mainly communicate through images instead of text, thus creating appealing advertisements. On the basis of those results and some literature insights, we formulate some managerial propositions that mass market companies may use to start developing dream-evoking communication in order to appeal to modern consumers. In particular, we present mass market managers with suggestions about how to employ the luxury model to make their communications more aspirational than rational through imagery rather than text

Recently, this perspective has been extended by the Smart City concept in order to include other aspects of city management: building, energy, environment, government, living, mobility, education, health and so on. At the best of our knowledge, a classification of Smart City Projects has not been created yet. This paper introduces such a classification, highlighting success factors and analyzing new trends in Smart City

    The Low End of the Initial Mass Function in Young LMC Clusters: I. The Case of R136

    We report the result of a study in which we have used very deep broadband V and I WFPC2 images of the R136 cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud from the HST archive, to sample the luminosity function below the detection limit of 2.8 Mo previously reached. In these new deeper images, we detect stars down to a limiting magnitude of m_F555W = 24.7 (~ 1 magnitude deeper than previous works), and identify a population of red stars evenly distributed in the surrounding of the R136 cluster. A comparison of our color-magnitude diagram with recentely computed evolutionary tracks indicates that these red objects are pre-main sequence stars in the mass range 0.6 - 3 Mo. We construct the initial mass function (IMF) in the 1.35 - 6.5 Mo range and find that, after correcting for incompleteness, the IMF shows a definite flattening below ~ 2 Mo. We discuss the implications of this result for the R136 cluster and for our understanding of starburst galaxies formation and evolution in general.Comment: 29 pages, 6 tables, 11 figures included + 3 external files, accepted for publication by Ap.

    Current Evidence Supporting the Role of Immune Response in ATTRv Amyloidosis

    Hereditary transthyretin (ATTRv) amyloidosis with polyneuropathy, also known as familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP), represents a progressive, heterogeneous, severe, and multisystemic disease caused by pathogenic variants in the TTR gene. This autosomal-dominant neurogenetic disorder has an adult onset with variable penetrance and an inconstant phenotype, even among subjects carrying the same mutation. Historically, ATTRv amyloidosis has been viewed as a non-inflammatory disease, mainly due to the absence of any mononuclear cell infiltration in ex vivo tissues; nevertheless, a role of inflammation in its pathogenesis has been recently highlighted. The immune response may be involved in the development and progression of the disease. Fibrillary TTR species bind to the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE), probably activating the nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) pathway. Moreover, peripheral blood levels of several cytokines, including interferon (IFN)-gamma, IFN-alpha, IL-6, IL-7, and IL-33, are altered in the course of the disease.     Assessing the freshwater quality of a large-scale mining watershed : the need for integrated approaches

    Water quality assessments provide essential information for protecting aquatic habitats and stakeholders downstream of mining sites. Moreover, mining companies must comply with environmental quality standards and include public participation in water quality monitoring (WQM) practices. However, overarching challenges beyond corporate environmental responsibility are the scientific soundness, political relevance and harmonization of WQM practices. In this study, a mountainous watershed supporting large-scale gold mining in the headwaters, besides urban and agricultural landuses at lower altitudes, is assessed in the dry season. Conventional physicochemical and biological (Biological Monitoring Water Party-Colombia index) freshwater quality parameters were evaluated, including hydromorphological and land-use characteristics. According to the indicators used, water quality deterioration by mining was absent, in contrast to the effects of urban economic activities, hydromorphological alterations and (less important) agricultural pollutants. We argue that mining impacts are hardly captured due to the limited ecological knowledge of high-mountain freshwaters, including uncharacterized mining-specific bioindicators, environmental baselines and groundwater processes, as well as ecotoxicological and microbial freshwater quality components. Lessons for overcoming scientific and operational challenges are drawn from joint efforts among governments, academia and green economy competitiveness. Facing a rapid development of extractive industries, interinstitutional and multidisciplinary collaborations are urgently needed to implement more integrated freshwater quality indicators of complex mining impacts
